What are the 6 qualities that surround good leadership? Part 2 of 6
Over 6 weeks, we will be looking at the qualities that surround 'Good Leaders' - we are up to week 2.
Just a reminder that promotion to leadership can happen for various reasons. Seniority, competence, popularity or even just simply being available!
Some people may just simply assume leadership because when they look around no one else is leading. Some are elected into a role of leadership because they weren’t there to object - I literally had this happen to me in one role of leadership!
But what are the 6 qualities that will make you a 'Good Leader' and not just a leader?
I have had many roles in leadership over my life. Some were comfortable and some very challenging; but every role taught me a little more about what it is that contributes to being a good leader.
So, over this 6 week series, I want to share with you 6 character traits to look for when choosing a leader in your business or organisation.
=============================================================
My favourite book on business is 'The Speed of Trust' by Stephen MR Covey, I read or listen to this book at least once a year.
Two quotes from this book are:
"When you break the big laws, you do not get liberty; you do not even get anarchy. You get the small laws. ... There are no moral shortcuts in the game of business."
“Above all, success in business requires two things: a winning competitive strategy, and superb organizational execution. Distrust is the enemy of both.”
You must show up, follow up and follow through if you want to be a good leader.
You must be credible, reliable, and trustworthy if you desire leadership.
The core qualities of your leadership are what make you attractive enough for people to want to follow you.
CREDIBILITY
The quality of being trusted and trustworthy.
People want to follow someone they can believe in.
They won't follow, for too long, someone they don’t believe is credible.
If the credibility of your candidate for leadership is in question, sort this out first before you consider the promotion. Otherwise, you may put a lot of investment into someone who will never represent themselves or your company in a way that will be essential for success.
Credibility is the seedbed of consistency, trustworthiness, reliability, and assurance. You want to choose a 'not only you can' rely on but 'everyone you meet' can rely on.
When every deal your leader makes is above question, you will receive a dividend in all transactions. The speed this leader will bring into your organisation will create bonuses for all who have the privilege with them.
So, when choosing a leader who has Charisma and Credibility combined, you are a third of the way through the 6 qualities you should be looking for in the leadership you want to have in your business or organisation.
- Do you rate yourself as a leader in Credibility?
- Would you like to move into a role of leadership?
- How is your Credibility?
- How many of the qualities listed about Credibility are evident in your life?
- How can you learn to become more Credible in your style to be thought of as a leader?
In my book the '5 Keys to Successful Business Planning' we walk people through how to attract, train, monitor, develop, and grow successful leaders in their business or organisation.
The E-book is now available on our website here.
Have a great week and remember to 'Planalife you want to live in through a Business on Purpose.'

Cheers, Ian.
