Behavioural Analytics – Part 4

Do you really know who you are? Read the next ten questions and see how many you can truthfully answer in a positive way.

Throughout February, we have been highlighting the benefits of Behavioural Analytics. We are discovering that when we truly understand ourselves, we make our first steps towards really understanding others. In part four today, we are going to look at questions 9 and 10:

  1. Do you know why you do what you do?
  2. Do you know why you have certain habits and where and how they were formed?
  3. Do you understand why you have certain behavioural traits?
  4. Do you know what it is that motivates you and why some things are difficult and other things you love doing?
  5. Do you understand and know your level of EQ Emotional Intelligence?
  6. Do you know your learning style? Are Visual, Auditory or Kinesthetic?
  7. Do you know why you act the way you do in conflict or when you are being disciplined? Do you know what causes you stress and  how to manage stress?
  8. Do you know your personality type?
  9. Do you know your internal driving forces?
  10. Can you regulate yourself and adjust to the conditions to still have peace regardless of the circumstances?

In every part of life and business, our communication and connection to others is improved by behavioural analytics. The traits we have that form gaps, barriers and drains in relationships erode by a greater understanding of the roots and fruits of our true self

9. Do you know your internal driving forces?

We probably have all heard the old expression, “actions speak louder that words”, however we are not just a product of our behaviour when it comes to our actions. Our actions are intrinsically connected to our internal driving forces. Some refer to this as our internal motivators. The tools we have to measure motivation or driving forces are based around 6 key words. We look at 6 key words and 12 explanations of how these words become actions in our lives.

The six keywords of motivation or driving forces are:

Knowledge: Are you intellectual or instinctive?
Utility: Are you resourceful or selfless?
Surroundings: Are you harmonious or objective?
Others: Are you intentional or altruistic?
Power: Are you commanding or collaborative?
Methodologies: Are you receptive or structured?

Also, what are the things that cause you stress? What energises you? What de-energises you? How will you act in certain situations due to influence pressure or opportunity? What does your mix of motivation look like? How will your motivation mix, or flavour, or influence your behaviour? How will your mix of motivators drive behaviour?

This is fascinating information that explains often how people can be similar in behaviour but one will be altruistic and the other intentional, and their behaviour seems to be polar opposite. The reality is, it is because the approach is driven by a combination of these two influencing forces combined. This is one area which constantly surprises me as I work through someone's profile and often for the first time, the pennies drop and people begin to fully understand themselves. They no longer make excuses, stop self effacing, develop stronger self efficacy and self belief and stop feeling they need to justify actions. In time, the excuses stop and maturity and acceptance with self understanding begins.

10. Can you regulate yourself and adjust to the conditions to still have peace regardless of the circumstances?

In short, yes you can! If you have a reasonable level of Emotional Intelligence [EQ is short for Emotional Quotient.] When we are measuring someone's EQ, we are looking to see how self-aware, self-regulated, and how motivated they are. Also, we are trying to understand how socially aware and socially regulated they will be when mixing with others.

Can they control emotions and impulse? Can they read an emotional climate? Do they know how and when to say the right thing, the right way? Are they socially unaware or awkward? When the fire starts, will they throw gasoline or water on it? Will they know how to stand for what they believe, even if they need to stand alone? Are they comfortable in their own skin to be aware they do not have to always be on centre stage? Do they seek the sensation of the significant? Do they bring joy into a room when they arrive or when they leave? Are they excited about life and motivated to help themself and others, or just one of those? Do they fit in with others or do they stand out for all the wrong reasons?

EQ is different to our behaviour and motivation which is more innate in us. EQ is taking a snapshot of this moment in time and life and comparing against who you could be. Trauma, exciting events, significant life moments like the death of someone close, marriage, divorce, having children, dealing with sickness (whether short team or chronic) can all place pressure on our EQ.

However most will develop a residual score to measure EQ and using this information can help you mature, develop roles in leadership, become the best version of yourself. With a healthy EQ, you can pursue greater roles of leadership and make a more significant contribution in many areas of your life. Successful living is not about what happens to us, it is however about what it is we allow through us. Life is not just a collection of experiences - it is about collaborative interaction, thoughtfulness, appreciation, self control, contribution and generosity combined with sustainable living. Most with a healthy EQ feel good about themselves and others, and will often be happier, healthier and wealthier. And yes - you can grow in maturity and EQ. EQ is not a fixed quantity.
