The Vocational Matrix

Do you currently feel like you are stuck in a rut?

Last week was our first week of the New Financial Year and I talked about having a Same Year, Significant Year or a Sensational Year. Well, what have you decided your business will be like this year? 

We had a sensational year last year and this year there are so many growth areas and new parts of the business that we want to consolidate. We have also just completed our “Celebrate and Separate”.  On the ‘Separate’ side we have decided to finish the ‘BOP Book Club'. It started very well but wasn't working long term, so we are setting it aside for 6 months and see if we can re-shape it in a better way. 

One of the strong items in my “Celebrate” list is our “Vocational Matrix.” With our Executive Clients, we work through the “Vocational Matrix'' which is a guide to help clients look at six significant areas in their professional life and build a career.  

What is a Vocational Matrix?

A Vocational Matrix is a tool to help you find a ‘Vocation’ and not just a job. If you find a job you will find something that will fill your time. If you find a VOCATION you will find something which will not only fill your time, it will fill your life! Your passion for a certain Vocation is “A strong feeling of suitability for a particular career or occupation.”

Over the last 40 years since I joined the workforce, I have discovered that two of the most important factors which help someone find harmony between their personal and professional life is to have a fulfilling Vocation in an enjoyable Location.

A VOCATION is so much more than a job!

A Vocation is a strong feeling of suitability for a particular career or occupation. When we are in a vocation we enjoy and feel inspired from, it is like we have found our calling and purpose, not just landed a job. When we are working in the right vocation, we feel like we are ‘On a mission'. Our life’s work gives us a sense of purpose and fulfilment. We are involved in a profession, trade or occupation where we feel a sense of synergy with life, more than just work. When we are in the right vocation our “Soul and our Role” combine to make every day a pleasure to be alive. When we find a job we enjoy we will never work a day in our life!  

Fitting into the right Vocation for us will mean our work, our trade or craft, our profession and our career has satisfaction, fulfilment and inspiration. In the right Vocation, the cadence of our walk through life has confidence and purpose or reason connected to it. We have the chance to become specialists or experts and create a niche for serving our community in a special or unique way. We really “Plan a life we want to live in” when we find what we love doing! Every job we do provides a degree of income or experience. Our Decided Vocation inspires and infuses life into our minds.  

The Vocational Matrix Chart

The chart below is where we begin our discussion to see where you are currently. After completing the course we will come back to this chart and update it and summarise the first steps you need to take to “Plan a life you want to live in”. The beginning of every journey in life is the inspiration to go somewhere new or intentionally and then the implementation process to make it happen. 

The 4 stages of our initial discussion are based on - Discover, Design, Decide, and Discipline. 

The old business proverb that states “Those who fail to plan, plan to fail” can be very easily rectified or corrected by the principles and processes we use in this course using the 4 “D’s”.
